Iran Condemns US Attacks, Citing Ceasefire Violations
Istanbul (ANTARA) - The Iranian Foreign Ministry, on Saturday, condemned United States attacks on coastal radar and surveillance facilities in the Sirik region of southern Iran, as well as on Qeshm Island. Tehran described the attacks as a clear violation of the 8 April ceasefire agreement and an act of aggression against the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the nation.
In a statement, the ministry said the facilities targeted by the US attacks in the early hours of Saturday were tasked with protecting Iran’s borders and ensuring the security of international shipping lanes. Iran views the attacks as part of the ongoing hostile and provocative actions by Washington against Iran, reflecting a disregard for the principles of international law and the United Nations (UN) Charter.
The ministry stated that the Iranian armed forces responded to the attacks within the framework of the nation’s right to self-defence and successfully thwarted the objectives of the strike. In its statement, Iran emphasised that the repeated ceasefire violations by the United States demonstrate Washington’s lack of commitment to reducing tensions and restoring stability.
Tehran warned that the United States will be held responsible for the consequences of its actions and any further escalation that may occur. Reaffirming Iran’s right to self-defence under Article 51 of the UN Charter, the ministry declared that Tehran would utilise all available means to defend its sovereignty, security, and national interests.
The Iranian Foreign Ministry also called upon regional nations to adhere to the principles of good neighbourly relations and to ensure that their territories or facilities are not used to plan or execute hostile actions against Iran. Furthermore, Iran urged the UN Secretary-General, the UN Security Council, and other international bodies to respond to what it termed the ongoing ceasefire violations and illegal actions by the United States, to prevent further threats to regional and international peace and security.
Earlier on Saturday, the United States Central Command (CENTCOM) stated it had attacked coastal surveillance radar locations in Sirik and Qeshm Island following attacks targeting the Strait of Hormuz and several countries in the Gulf region. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) subsequently announced that United States military bases in the region had been targeted by missile strikes in response to the actions taken by Washington.
