Iran clears 50 underground tunnel entrances after US-Israel attack
Iran has cleared debris from 50 of 69 tunnel entrances at 18 underground bases previously targeted by US and Israeli strikes, according to a CNN report on Sunday (31 May) citing satellite imagery analysis. Report indicates that recovery efforts at Iran’s underground facilities have accelerated since the ceasefire took effect. CNN-reviewed satellite images show cleanup activities at several affected sites. In the days following the strikes, the US and Israel sought to restrict access to Iran’s underground facilities through missile attacks. CNN reports the strikes targeted access routes to the facilities, causing some tunnel entrances to collapse. Since the ceasefire, cleanup operations at the underground bases have reportedly intensified significantly. Satellite imagery shows Iran using basic equipment, including bulldozers and dump trucks, to clear debris and damage from missile strikes. On 28 February, the US and Israel launched a joint strike on dozens of targets in Iran, causing damage and civilian casualties. Washington and Tehran announced a two-week ceasefire on 7 April. However, subsequent talks in Islamabad concluded without concrete results. Following this, the US imposed a blockade on Iranian ports. US President Donald Trump subsequently extended the cessation of hostilities to allow Iran time to prepare a peace proposal.
