Iran Claims US Attack on Radar Sites Violates Ceasefire
Iran has strongly condemned United States attacks on radar and coastal surveillance facilities in the southern region of the country. Iran described the strikes as a “clear violation” of the fragile ceasefire between Washington and Tehran.
According to reports, the attacks targeted facilities in the Sirik region and Qeshm Island which, according to the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, “serve to guard the nation’s borders and ensure the security of navigation in international waters.”
The US Central Command (CENTCOM) previously stated that its forces attacked surveillance radar locations in the area “to defend against further maritime attacks” after Iran launched drones towards the Strait of Hormuz.
“The Ministry describes the attack as a clear violation of the 8 April ceasefire and an act of military aggression against the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Islamic Republic of Iran,” the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated.
According to the ministry, the latest attack demonstrates that Washington “has no will to reduce tensions” and is part of a “broader pattern of hostile and provocative behaviour by the United States towards Iran.”
Iran also added that its armed forces have responded to the US attacks in a manner that is “vigilant, firm, and proportional.”
Earlier, the US military stated that its forces had attacked radar installations on Iran’s southern coast on Friday (5/6) local time, in the latest escalation of tensions threatening the fragile ceasefire in the Middle East war.
US Central Command, which oversees US military operations in the Middle East, announced that its forces first intercepted four one-way attack drones launched by Iran towards the strategic waters of the Strait of Hormuz. Following this, CENTCOM stated that US forces attacked Iranian coastal reconnaissance radar sites located in Goruk, Qeshm Island.
“Those attack drones posed a direct threat to regional maritime traffic,” CENTCOM said in its statement. CENTCOM noted that the US strikes on the Iranian radar installations were intended to “prevent further attacks.”
