Iran claims destruction of US fighter jets in attack on Jordan airbase

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has claimed its forces destroyed at least two US fighter jets in a recent missile and drone attack on an airbase in Jordan.

According to an IRGC statement broadcast by Iranian state media, the attack on Al Azraq Air Base was carried out as part of the 20th wave of ‘Operation Nasr 2’. The statement claimed that in addition to the two fighter jets, three other US aircraft were ‘completely destroyed’.

The IRGC also stated that a separate wave of attacks, the 19th of Operation Nasr 2, targeted a fuel support dock used by the US Navy at the Al Ahmadi Port in Kuwait.

The reported strikes mark a significant escalation in hostilities. Since 8 July, US forces have conducted a series of attacks against Iran, which the US Central Command (CENTCOM) described as retaliation for Iranian actions against commercial vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz. In response, Iranian forces have launched counter-attacks on US military bases across the Middle East. The situation further deteriorated on 9 July when US President Donald Trump declared that a previous ceasefire agreement with Iran was no longer in effect.
