Iran claims attack on US military facilities in Bahrain, radar in Oman

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has stated that it targeted American military facilities in Bahrain and radar systems in neighbouring Oman, according to Iranian state media IRIB. Citing a statement from the IRGC Navy, IRIB reported on Monday that missile and drone attacks targeted US military infrastructure in Juffair, Bahrain, as well as long-range air surveillance radar and maritime surveillance radar in Oman. Shortly after Iran’s announcement, Bahrain’s Interior Ministry stated that air raid sirens sounded again across the country and urged residents to remain calm and proceed to the nearest safe location. The IRGC stated that the only way to reopen the Strait of Hormuz to maritime traffic is for the United States to end its military interference in the strategic waterway and respect the sovereignty of coastal states. The IRGC also warned that continued US military activity in the Strait of Hormuz would trigger ‘larger incidents’ that could affect the global oil and gas sector. This latest claim comes amid escalating exchanges between Iran and the United States following a series of attacks on commercial ships in the Strait of Hormuz. The IRGC had previously announced the closure of the Strait of Hormuz to maritime traffic until further notice on Sunday. In June, Iran and the United States signed a memorandum of understanding mediated by Pakistan aimed at ending the military conflict and reaching a permanent peace agreement. However, following the latest escalation, US President Donald Trump declared that the memorandum of understanding with Iran had ‘expired’.
