The situation in the Middle East is heating up after Iran confirmed it has launched attacks on United States (US) military facilities in Kuwait. This strike follows a nearly week-long hiatus.

In a statement, the Iranian military claimed to have targeted fighter jet shelters, satellite communication systems, and equipment storage facilities at the Ahmad al-Jaber Air Base in Kuwait. As of now, there has been no direct comment from the US Central Command (CENTCOM).

According to reports, the Iranian military stated that the attack was carried out in response to recent US military aggression against their nation and a brutal attack on a residential home on Qeshm Island. Previously, Iranian local media reported on Thursday (30/7) that three family members were killed in a US strike on Qeshm Island in the Strait of Hormuz, a vital waterway for global oil and gas trade. This trade route typically carries approximately 20 per cent of global oil shipments and has been effectively closed by Iran since the outbreak of war on 28 February.

The US has conducted repeated strikes against Iran’s southern coastal provinces in an attempt to weaken Tehran’s control over the Strait of Hormuz. This Iranian drone attack on Kuwait follows an Iranian missile strike on Thursday (30/7) morning that hit a building owned by a Chinese company in northern Kuwait, resulting in the death of one worker.

In a post on social media platform X, the Kuwaiti Ministry of Defence stated that the Iranian missile attack caused significant damage to the building. “Iran’s heinous aggression targeted a building owned by a Chinese company in the northern part of the country, resulting in the death of a worker and causing severe material damage to the structure,” the statement from the Kuwaiti Ministry of Defence read.

The Kuwaiti armed forces reaffirmed their commitment to protecting the sovereignty and security of the nation, in coordination with relevant authorities, to ensure the safety of citizens and residents. Kuwait is among several Gulf nations, alongside Jordan, that have been targeted by Iranian drone and missile attacks since the beginning of the Middle East conflict.

Conflict escalated again on Wednesday (29/7) when the US military launched its latest wave of attacks against Iran. The strikes lasted for two hours and hit dozens of targets within Iran. Washington described the latest operation as a strong response to Iranian missiles launched towards US forces in the Middle East the previous day.
