Iranian forces have reportedly attacked anti-Iran Kurdish separatist forces in Iraqi Kurdistan, Tehran saying the group is allied with the United States. According to Al Jazeera, on Thursday 5 March 2026, in a video broadcast on X, Iran’s Press TV reported that the explosion lit up the night in the region; the broadcaster did not specify the location of the strike.

Earlier reports described an explosion in the Sulaymaniyah Governorate in northern Iraq. Local sources said the attack targeted the headquarters of the Kurdistan Workers’ Association, or Komala, an armed Kurdish Iranian group in Iraq.

The strike comes amid reports that the Iranian Kurdish armed group has consulted with the US in recent days about whether, and how, to strike Iranian security forces in the western part of the country. Reuters reported that a coalition of Iran-based Kurdish groups on the Iran–Iraq border has trained to carry out such attacks in order to weaken Iran’s military. Earlier, Tasnim News Agency denied reports of armed Kurdish fighters crossing into Iran from Iraq.
