Iran Arrests 11 Foreign Nationals Over Fuel Smuggling Allegations

Iranian authorities have arrested 11 foreign nationals in connection with an alleged attempt to smuggle fuel out of the country. The operation led to the seizure of 382,000 litres of diesel that was intended for smuggling.

As reported by AFP on Friday (4/8/2026), these arrests occur while Iran is struggling to import sufficient fuel to meet domestic demand, following a United States maritime blockade on the country’s ports.

“Border guards have arrested 11 foreign national suspects,” stated Iranian state television on Wednesday (2/9) local time. The specific nationalities of the 11 suspects were not further disclosed.

Iranian state television reported that officers acted upon intelligence regarding an attempt to smuggle fuel using barges in Gulf waters. Upon searching the vessel, officials discovered 382,000 litres of diesel fuel.

For years, Iranian authorities have been working to suppress widespread fuel smuggling, particularly in the southern regions along the Gulf. Such smuggling practices have contributed to local fuel supply shortages.

Recently, the US imposed a blockade on Iranian ports in retaliation for Tehran’s decision to close the Strait of Hormuz to shipping activities. The Strait of Hormuz, a vital artery for oil and gas shipments from the Gulf region, has been impacted by the ongoing conflict between Iran and the US.

On 1 September, the Speaker of the Iranian Parliament, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, urged citizens to reduce petrol consumption. Long queues have been observed at various petrol stations across the Tehran area in recent days.
