Tehran (ANTARA) – The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) of Iran has appointed Ahmad Vahidi as its new commander, following his previous role as adviser, according to Iranian news agency Khabar Online.

Vahidi has been appointed to replace Mohammad Pakpour, who was killed in recent US and Israeli attacks.

The strikes resulted in the deaths of Iran’s highest-ranking military commanders, including Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, who serves as the supreme commander of Iran’s armed forces, as confirmed by Iranian state media on Sunday.

Among those killed were Iran’s Chief of Staff Abdulrahim Mousavi, Defence Minister Aziz Nasirzadeh, IRGC Commander Pakpour, and Defence Council Secretary Ali Shamkhani.

On Saturday, the United States and Israel launched a series of attacks against Iranian targets, including Tehran, resulting in damage and civilian casualties.

Iran subsequently responded by launching retaliatory missile strikes against Israeli territory and US military infrastructure in the Middle East.
