Iran Announces End of Doha Talks on Peace MoU Implementation
Tehran (ANTARA) - Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs, Kazem Gharibabadi, announced on Wednesday (1/7) the conclusion of negotiations in Qatar regarding the implementation of the peace memorandum of understanding (MoU) between Iran and the United States (US).
Iran’s official news agency, IRNA, reported that Gharibabadi, leading a delegation from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Central Bank, and the Ministry of Agriculture, stated that the Iranian team held talks with the Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Qatar, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani, in the morning, and subsequently attended two meetings with delegations from Qatar and Pakistan.
“The first meeting of the monitoring group for the implementation of the MoU was also held with the participation of senior negotiators from the three countries,” said Gharibabadi.
IRNA reported that during these discussions, the Iranian delegation emphasised and addressed US violations of its obligations under Paragraph 1 of the MoU, which pertains to the cessation of war in Lebanon, reports regarding US actions related to the reinforcement of military equipment and troops in the West Asian region, and “threatening and interventionist” statements made by US officials.
Gharibabadi explained that the Iranian delegation highlighted that the obligations of the parties under the MoU constitute an integrated whole and cannot be viewed in isolation. The Iranian delegation also added that a decision has been made regarding the emergency communication channels for the monitoring group, which will be established no later than Thursday (2/7), and that any violations of the MoU will be officially reported, discussed, and documented.
Gharibabadi noted that during a series of meetings with Qatari officials, including representatives from the Iranian central bank, certain issues regarding the use of a portion of Iran’s frozen assets, valued at $6 billion USD (1 USD = IDR 17,961), were discussed. It was decided that, based on Iran’s needs, necessary goods will be purchased and delivered to the country.
Gharibabadi emphasised that no direct meetings between the Iranian and US delegations were held in Doha.
According to IRNA, alongside the series of meetings by the Iranian team in Doha, a US delegation led by US President Donald Trump’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff, and Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner, was also in Qatar to hold meetings with Qatari officials.
On 18 June, Iran and the US signed an MoU regarding the cessation of war in the region on all fronts, including in Lebanon.
On 22 June, technical negotiations between Iran and the US commenced in Switzerland, following high-level consultations between Iranian and US delegations the previous day, mediated by Pakistan and Qatar.
