Iran and US Reportedly Exchange Fire in Strait of Hormuz

Istanbul (ANTARA) - The Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy reportedly exchanged fire with United States forces in the Strait of Hormuz, according to Iranian state television on Wednesday.

Iran’s semi-official Tasnim news agency, quoting authorities in Hormozgan province, reported that explosions were heard in Bandar Abbas, coastal cities, and Iranian islands as a result of the clash in the strait.

The Mehr news agency also said explosions were heard east of Sirik in connection with the exchange of fire in nearby Gulf waters.

The reports emerged amid a fresh wave of explosions in several locations in southern Iran as military confrontation between Iran and the US intensifies.

US Central Command (CENTCOM) said the strikes were aimed at degrading Iran’s ability to attack commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz.

In addition, CENTCOM said US forces had continued a naval blockade of vessels travelling to and from Iranian ports and coastal areas.

The US has also deployed more than 20 US Navy warships and hundreds of military aircraft to operate across the Middle East, declaring that American forces remain “vigilant, lethal, and ready.”

Tensions between the US and Iran over the Strait of Hormuz have risen again in recent days.

Both sides have continued attacking each other despite a Pakistan-mediated memorandum of understanding intended to end the conflict and achieve a lasting peace deal.
