Iran and US Renew Hostilities Despite Ceasefire
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed to have attacked a US military base after accusing the US of striking a telecommunications tower on Sirik Island, Iran. The incident heightened tensions amid the fragile ceasefire between the two nations on Monday (1/6).
According to reports from Iranian state media including Fars News Agency, the IRGC stated the action was a response to a prior attack on a telecommunications tower in Sirik Island, Hormozgan Province, southern Iran.
“Following the US military’s aggression against a communications tower on Sirik Island, Hormozgan Province, one hour ago, IRGC Aerospace Force jets targeted the airbase from which the attack originated, and the predicted target was successfully destroyed,” according to the report cited by Al Jazeera on Monday (1/6).
Despite claiming success in destroying the target, the IRGC did not disclose the exact location of the attacked base. Shortly after Iran’s announcement, Kuwaiti news agency KUNA reported that Kuwait’s air defence systems intercepted several missiles and drones on Monday (1/6).
Kuwait’s government has yet to provide official details about the attack or the party responsible for launching it. Kuwait and other Arab nations have previously been targeted by Iran’s retaliatory strikes against the US and Israel due to hosting US military bases in the Middle East.
According to reports, despite a ceasefire having been in place since early April, the US and Iran have continued sporadic attacks across various regions.
Meanwhile, both sides have maintained diplomatic channels to seek a more permanent resolution to the conflict. In recent days, tensions have escalated again following military actions from both parties.
The US Central Command (CENTCOM) stated that US military strikes along Iran’s Gulf coast over the weekend were a response to actions deemed a threat to American assets.
CENTCOM said the operation was conducted after Iran shot down a US MQ-1 drone conducting a mission over international waters.
“US fighter jets swiftly responded by destroying Iran’s air defence systems, ground control stations, and two one-way attack drones that posed a real threat to vessels transiting the region,” CENTCOM stated.
CENTCOM also affirmed it would continue taking necessary measures to protect US personnel, assets, and interests during the ceasefire period.
