Iran and US Claimed to Have Agreed to End War
A senior US administration official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said both countries have agreed on a draft text and Washington hopes a preliminary agreement can be signed within the next few days. “Both parties have agreed to the text and we expect the initial agreement can be signed in the coming days,” the official said, as quoted by Reuters on Sunday (14/6/2026).
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi also confirmed progress in the negotiations. While acknowledging the possibility of changes to the content of the agreement, he assessed that the interim results show Iran emerging as the stronger party from the conflict. “Iran is the winner of the war with the US,” Araqchi said in an interview with Iranian state television.
Amid the diplomatic progress, military tensions persist. Reuters reported that US forces shot down several Iranian suicide drones heading towards the Strait of Hormuz, deemed a threat to commercial shipping traffic. US Central Command (CENTCOM) subsequently confirmed that shipping lanes in the region remain open.
Under the draft memorandum of understanding being discussed, Iran will reopen the Strait of Hormuz and the US will halt its naval blockade of Iranian ports. Afterwards, both countries will continue negotiations on Tehran’s nuclear programme, which was the main reason Washington launched military operations previously. A US official said the agreement fulfils President Donald Trump’s main objectives and puts the negotiation process in a very strong position.
The progress towards a deal was welcomed positively by global markets. Brent crude oil prices fell more than 3 percent to their lowest level in nearly two months, while global stock markets strengthened amid rising hopes for an end to the conflict in the Gulf region. However, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stressed that his country will not be part of the agreement and will maintain its freedom of action against threats deemed to endanger its national security.
