Iran and US Agree on Political Communication Channel, Military Contact Still Off the Table

The Iranian government has confirmed the opening of a political communication channel with the United States following a series of intensive negotiations held at the Burgenstock resort in Switzerland. Nevertheless, Tehran has stressed that to date, no agreement has been reached to open a communication channel at the military level.

Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Esmail Baghaei explained that the channel currently established is purely diplomatic and political in nature. The move was taken as a follow-up to de-escalation efforts between the two countries that have been ongoing in recent months.

‘First of all, there is no military communication channel. This is a communication channel between political parties from both countries. On our side, it is represented by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, while on the United States side, it is represented by authorised officials from their political institutions,’ Baghaei said at a press conference in Tehran on Tuesday (30/6).

Baghaei revealed that the agreement to open this communication channel was the result of mediation carried out by Qatar and Pakistan on Sunday (21/6). Both countries played an important role in bridging the interests of Tehran and Washington in order to find a diplomatic meeting point.

Prior to the conclusion of this political channel agreement, both parties had actually shown positive signals through the electronic signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on Thursday (18/6). The document regulates the cessation of military conflict that has been ongoing since 28 February.

In addition to regulating political communication, the agreement document also contains crucial points related to economic stability and maritime security. This step is considered significant progress in bilateral relations between the two countries, which have often been tense. However, the absence of a military communication channel indicates that trust between the two parties is still in its early stages and heavily dependent on the successful implementation of this newly opened political channel.
