Iran and US Agree on New Political Communication Channel

Iran and the United States have opened a political communication channel following negotiations at the Bürgenstock Resort in Switzerland, although it has been confirmed that no military communication channel exists between the two nations, stated Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei on Tuesday.

“First of all, there is no military communication channel. This is a communication channel between the political parties of both countries. On our side, it is represented by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, while on the United States side, it is represented by authorised officials from their political institutions,” Baghaey said during a press conference.

According to Baghaei, the opening of this communication channel was agreed upon during negotiations between Iran and the United States, which were mediated by Qatar and Pakistan on Sunday (21/6).

Previously, in the early hours of Thursday (18/6), Iran and the United States electronically signed a memorandum of understanding regulating the cessation of military conflict since 28 February.

The document also establishes a schedule for the United States to lift its naval blockade on Iranian ports, as well as for Iran to restore shipping activities in the Strait of Hormuz.
