Iran and Oman to discuss Strait of Hormuz situation

Iranian Parliament Speaker and chief negotiator Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf said on Monday he is heading to Oman for negotiations on the situation regarding the Strait of Hormuz. Iran and the US held talks in Burgenstock, Switzerland, on Sunday, with Qatar and Pakistan acting as mediators. The US delegation was led by Vice President JD Vance, while Ghalibaf led the Iranian team. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei and Vance subsequently announced progress in the talks. “Ghalibaf will meet with Sultan Haitham bin Tarik of Oman during his visit and discuss developments in bilateral cooperation, as well as assistance for Iran’s arrangements in managing the Strait of Hormuz,” Ghalibaf said in a statement on his Telegram channel. Previously, Iran said it was discussing a shipping mechanism for the Strait of Hormuz with Oman. On 12 June 2026, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, who will accompany Ghalibaf on the visit to Oman, said that Tehran and Muscat would issue a joint statement on the matter in the near future. On the evening of 18 June, Iran and the US signed a memorandum remotely that regulates the cessation of the military conflict that began on 28 February. The document also sets deadlines for the US to lift its naval blockade of Iranian ports and for Iran to restore shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.
