Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei stated on Sunday that future arrangements for managing maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz must be conducted through consultation with Oman. The remarks were made during a press briefing explaining Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi’s visit to Muscat on Saturday. Baghaei emphasised that the management of traffic in the Strait of Hormuz should be arranged through consultation between the two coastal states, taking into account developments in recent months, particularly the war imposed by the United States and Israel against Iran and its security consequences for shipping in the strait. The talks on Saturday between the Iranian and Omani foreign ministers aimed to ensure coordination between the two coastal countries regarding administrative arrangements for traffic and navigation in the Strait of Hormuz. Baghaei noted that legal and technical teams from both nations also attended the discussions. The two sides exchanged views on ensuring the security and safety of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, upholding the sovereign rights of both countries and international law, and considering the provisions of a recently signed peace memorandum of understanding between Iran and the United States on ending the war. He stressed that Iran and Oman agreed to continue talks to reach a common understanding on efforts to guarantee the security of navigation in the strait. Baghaei added that a delegation from Qatar, which has been mediating negotiations between Iran and the United States in recent months, also attended part of the discussions.
