Iran and Oman Agree on Strait of Hormuz Shipping Route Coordinates
Iran and Oman have reached an agreement through dialogue on safe navigation in the Strait of Hormuz and are preparing a joint statement based on the accord, Iran’s Foreign Ministry said. Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei explained to reporters on Wednesday (5/8/2026) the progress of dialogue between Tehran and Muscat regarding the strategic sea lane connecting the Persian Gulf with the Indian Ocean.
He said that Iran and Oman, as the two coastal states bordering the Strait of Hormuz, have agreed on geographical coordinates for shipping routes in the waterway. According to him, a joint statement is also being drafted and reviewed, on the condition that no outside party interferes in the process.
Baqaei explained that Tehran and Muscat have been in dialogue over the past two months to establish safe shipping routes in the Strait of Hormuz. In that process, Iranian authorities reviewed the proposal from technical, legal, security and environmental impact perspectives.
He stressed that the bilateral understanding between Iran and Oman cannot be the sole guarantee of safe navigation in the Strait of Hormuz. Security dynamics, he noted, may still be affected by the United States’ naval blockade and actions he described as aggressive and threatening towards Iran and its interests.
Baqaei also highlighted the dangerous consequences of US actions for the entire region. He warned that the Strait of Hormuz could be closed as a result of military aggression which, according to him, was launched by the United States and Israel against Iran.
Meanwhile, responding to reports of a possible visit by Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, Baqaei denied any such plans. Nevertheless, Pakistan and Qatar are continuing their efforts to ease tensions. The Islamic Republic of Iran also continues to maintain close communication with both countries to discuss the latest developments, Baqaei said.
