The Middle East is experiencing a significant escalation in hostilities, with reports indicating that Iran and Israel have engaged in mutual attacks. According to the latest AFP update on Monday (8/6/2026), the Israeli military launched missile strikes against several regions in Iran. This action was a response to a barrage of missiles fired by Iran on Sunday, which Tehran claimed was a reaction to attacks in southern Lebanon that violated a ceasefire.

The Israeli military stated that they targeted several sites within a petrochemical complex in Mahshahr, southwest Iran. Iranian media confirmed the strikes, reporting that the ‘Zionist enemy’ conducted airstrikes against the Karoon Petrochemical Company in Mahshahr.

This escalation comes as US President Donald Trump has attempted to restrain Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. In an interview with Axios, Trump expressed his intention to urge Netanyahu against further retaliation, stating, ‘Israel has conducted its attacks and Iran has conducted its attacks. We do not need any more attacks.’ In a separate interview with Fox News, Trump also advised Iran to cease missile launches and return to negotiations with the United States, saying, ‘What I will suggest to Iran: You have fired your missiles, that is enough, come back to the negotiating table and make a deal.’

Iran has maintained that any permanent end to the war must also include a cessation of the parallel conflict in Lebanon, where Israel is campaigning against the Iranian-backed Hezbollah movement. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Ali Safari told Al-Mayadeen television that Tehran’s Sunday attacks occurred after weeks of restraint following Israeli aggression. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) described the strikes as a ‘warning’ following Israeli attacks on the southern outskirts of Beirut.

Simultaneously, Iranian attacks were also reported in the Kurdistan region of Iraq on Monday, with Tehran accusing armed Kurdish parties of serving Western or Israeli interests.

Adding to the regional instability, the Houthi rebels in Yemen have officially declared a total maritime blockade against Israeli navigation in the Red Sea. The Houthi armed forces stated, ‘We declare a comprehensive and total ban on Israeli maritime navigation in the Red Sea,’ further asserting that all enemy movements would be considered legitimate military targets. This move heightens fears of significant disruptions to major global trade routes, as the Houthis have previously forced cargo ships to take much longer routes around the southern tip of Africa. These threats emerge while the Strait of Hormuz remains under pressure due to the ongoing Middle East conflict involving the US, Israel, and Iran.
