Iran Admits Bushehr Airport Crippled by US Attacks

The Iranian government has acknowledged that Bushehr Airport in the southwestern region of the country can no longer operate as a result of a barrage of United States (US) attacks. Speaking at a press conference, as reported by the IRNA news agency and cited by Anadolu Agency, Tuesday (28/7/2026), Iranian government spokesperson Fatemeh Mohajerani said she and several Tehran officials had visited Bushehr Province and inspected the condition of the airport there. Mohajerani described Bushehr Airport as a facility that is ‘practically no longer operational’. ‘We saw the wreckage of an aircraft that had been reconditioned and purchased to serve the public, but it was destroyed by a direct missile hit, leaving only a small portion of its tail section intact,’ Mohajerani said during the press conference. Mohajerani said the damage has rendered Bushehr Airport inoperable. However, she did not provide further details on when the attack occurred or the extent of damage to other airport facilities. It was also not mentioned whether there were any casualties from the attack in the Bushehr area. The statement was made after the situation in the Middle East region had been relatively calm since Friday (24/7) last week, following the decision by Iran and the US to suspend attacks after a 13-day conflict escalation that began on 11 July. During the escalation, the US launched waves of airstrikes against targets inside Iran. Tehran retaliated by targeting Washington’s military facilities and assets in its neighbouring countries in the Gulf region. The latest dispute between Iran and the US has focused on the Strait of Hormuz, where the two nations are vying for control of the waterway vital for global oil and gas supplies. The US demands unimpeded freedom of navigation in the strategic waterway, while Iran insists that ships traverse the lane near its coastline under a navigation mechanism it manages itself.
