Iran accuses US of exploiting support for Hormuz Strait resolution

Ontario, Canada (ANTARA) - Iran’s permanent mission to the UN blamed the United States on Friday (May 15) for attempting to rally international support for its actions against Iran through a draft UN Security Council resolution on the Strait of Hormuz.

In a post on its X social media account, the mission stated that the US is exploiting the support of several countries for the unilateral, politically motivated draft resolution to create the impression of broad international support for what it considers the US’s illegal actions.

“It is now very clear that the US is trying to exploit the number of supporters – referred to as supporters of the politically and unilaterally motivated draft resolution – to create a false image of broad international support for the ongoing illegal actions,” wrote Iran’s permanent mission to the UN.

Furthermore, the US effort is being made to open up opportunities for further military action in the region.

Iran also warned the countries supporting the US-led initiative that they may be held accountable if tensions escalate.

“If the US triggers a new escalation, all supporting countries will share international responsibility with Washington for the consequences. There is no political or diplomatic shield that can absolve them of responsibility for facilitating, enabling, and legitimizing US aggression,” the statement said.

A ceasefire took effect on April 8 with mediation by Pakistan. However, negotiations in Islamabad failed to produce a lasting agreement.

Trump then extended the ceasefire indefinitely while maintaining a blockade against ships sailing to or from Iranian ports through the Strait of Hormuz.
