Tehran - Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei on Wednesday called on the United States government to stop making interpretations that completely contradict the recently signed memorandum of understanding (MoU) on peace between Iran and the US. He made the statement in a post on social media platform X, condemning contradictory statements made by US officials regarding the provisions of the MoU. He said that statements about ending the war would not help reduce distrust among the Iranian people and would only serve as a reminder of past broken promises. Baghaei stressed that the US government has never shown sincerity in its conduct towards the Iranian nation, adding that, despite having reasons not to trust it, Iran entered the diplomatic process with the US in good faith and signed the MoU. The Iranian people know that their grievances will not end with the signing of the MoU, given what they have experienced over the last five decades, especially developments in the previous 18 months, he said. On 18 June, Iran and the US signed an MoU to end the war in the region on all fronts, including Lebanon. Under the MoU, the two countries agreed to hold negotiations over 60 days, which are currently underway, towards a final agreement primarily concerning Iran’s nuclear programme and the lifting of sanctions against the country.
