Iran Accuses US of Ceasefire Breach Following Missile Strike
Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) has condemned recent US strikes on Iranian territory, with Tehran accusing Washington of violating a ceasefire agreement.
According to AFP, Tuesday, 26 May 2026, the statement came after the US Central Command said its forces attacked missile sites and vessels in southern Iran on Monday, which were attempting to lay mines in the Gulf. Meanwhile, Iran’s Revolutionary Guard claimed to have shot down a US aircraft attempting to enter its airspace.
“The terrorist US army, continuing illegal and unjustified actions since the ceasefire… has committed serious breaches of the ceasefire in Hormozgan province over the past 48 hours,” the Iranian MFA stated on Tuesday.
Tehran vowed to respond to any crimes and defend the Iranian nation without hesitation.
The statement was issued as a high-level Iranian delegation was in Qatar for diplomatic talks aimed at ending the war with the US, which began on 28 February.
The US military announced a “defensive” strike in southern Iran, involving missile launches and mine-laying operations by US vessels.
The attack was carried out “to protect our forces from threats posed by Iranian troops,” but the military “exercised restraint during the ongoing ceasefire,” said US Central Command spokesperson Tim Hawkins.
Technical details of the operation remain unclear, and it is uncertain how the strike will affect ongoing talks between the two sides.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said a deal with Iran is still possible despite the latest military action.
“There are talks happening in Qatar today, so we’ll see if we can make progress,” Rubio told journalists during an official visit to India.
“I think there’s a lot of back-and-forth on specific language in the initial document, so it will take several days,” he added. “The President has stated his desire to resolve this. He will make a good deal or no deal at all.”
