Iran: 10 Percent Chance of Peace Still Worth Pursuing

Negotiations have several objectives … and we must not squander that opportunity.

Istanbul (ANTARA) - Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said his side continues to strive for the path of negotiation before war, even though the estimated chance of achieving a peaceful settlement is only around 10 per cent.

According to Araghchi, negotiations continue in order to find a way to meet Iran’s demands whilst avoiding armed conflict.

“Negotiations have several objectives. One of them is the possibility of finding a way through negotiation to achieve our demands, and we must not squander that opportunity,” Araghchi said in an interview published on Sunday (19/7).

He said Iran still considers negotiations a worthwhile effort to pursue, even though the chance of success is very small.

“We say that even if there is only a 10 per cent chance of achieving an outcome other than war through negotiation, we must seize that opportunity,” Araghchi said.

Tensions in the region have risen since the United States and Israel launched joint military operations against Iran in February.

Iran responded with missile and drone attacks targeting several Gulf states hosting US military assets.

The US and Iran had reached a memorandum of understanding, mediated by Pakistan, to end the conflict and pave the way for a peace agreement.

However, tensions rose again due to a dispute over the Strait of Hormuz, triggering exchanges of attacks between the two countries.
