Apple is reportedly considering a limited colour palette for its debut foldable smartphone, the iPhone Fold, which may exclude the black option that is a staple of the standard iPhone lineup. According to technology leaker Instant Digital via Weibo, as reported by Macrumors, Apple has yet to finalise whether a black variant will be available.

The leaker even jokingly questioned, “Do they have a grudge against the colour black?”, suggesting that the Cupertino-based company is currently weighing its colour options. Previous leaks from February 2026 suggested the device would only be available in two colours, with white being the only confirmed option. More recent reports from May 2026 indicate no change to this two-option plan.

Separately, Macworld cited supply chain sources claiming the second colour could be an indigo shade, similar to the Deep Blue seen on the iPhone 17 Pro, alongside classic silver and white. The source also noted that the device will offer fewer colour choices than the iPhone 18 Pro, avoiding bold or bright hues.

Regarding production, Samsung Display’s OLED panels for the device have already entered mass production. Decisions regarding colour typically impact manufacturing and component procurement, which must be finalised well before launch. Given the complexity and limited supply of a device like the iPhone Fold, significant late-stage uncertainty is unlikely, suggesting the rumours may simply reflect ambiguity regarding the second colour option in the supply chain.

Supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has warned that production yield challenges and capacity increases could limit supply until at least the end of 2026. He noted that the frequently cited figure of 15 to 20 million units likely represents cumulative demand over a two-to-three-year product lifecycle, rather than just for 2026. Adding more colour variants increases the volume of devices that must be produced, stored, and allocated, presenting a complication that Apple may lack the commercial incentive to undertake, especially given the expected limited supply at launch.

With an initial price expected to exceed the $2,000 threshold (approximately Rp36 million), according to Mark Gurman, the foldable iPhone is unlikely to target buyers whose purchasing decisions are heavily driven by colour preference. Apple’s first foldable iPhone is expected to be announced in September 2026, alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max.
