iPhone Duo Debuts Featuring 2nm Chip and Apple Pencil Support
Apple has officially launched the iPhone Duo, its first foldable smartphone, equipped with the 2nm A20 Pro chip and compatible with the Apple Pencil.
The device debuts with a compact foldable design that is currently gaining popularity. When unfolded, the phone provides a large 7.6-inch display, while the closed position offers a 5.4-inch screen.
“The iPhone Duo is the most transformative change to the iPhone since the first-generation iPhone,” said Apple CEO John Ternus in a broadcast featured on Apple’s website on Thursday.
The iPhone Duo features a 7.6-inch Super Retina XDR panel when unfolded, utilising special nano-texture glass to minimise glare and crease visibility. On the exterior, there is a 5.4-inch Super Retina Xder display that covers 90 per cent of the iPhone 18 Pro’s screen area.
This display is supported by ProMotion technology, a 120Hz refresh rate, and a peak brightness of 3,000 nits. Due to its large screen size, the iPhone Duo is also the first iPhone to support the Apple Pencil (USB-C).
To enhance durability, Apple has equipped the iPhone Duo with Grade 5 Titanium and Ceramic Shield 2 on the front, which is three times more scratch-resistant, alongside Ceramic Shield on the rear body. Its resilience is further supported by a precision hinge consisting of over 100 components, an internal support architecture, and an IP68 water and dust resistance certification.
Regarding performance, the foldable phone is powered by the 2nm architecture A20 Pro chip, combining a 6-core CPU, a 7-core GPU, and a 16-core Dual Neural Engine for on-device AI processing. Sustained performance has increased by up to 35 per cent thanks to a thermal management system that connects the chip directly to a specialised vapour chamber.
For photography, the foldable is strengthened by a 48 MP Fusion main camera capable of 2x optical telephoto zoom and 4K120 fps Dolby Vision video recording, as well as a 48 MP Fusion ultra-wide camera for macro photography. The foldable design enables various new features, such as AI-based Smart Take for automatic shooting, Duo Preview for viewing previews on the outer screen, Kid Cue which displays Peanuts character animations to engage children during photos, and support for selfies using the main camera.
The newly redesigned FaceTime camera is embedded under the display panel to provide a seamless and clean appearance.
Supporting the performance of the foldable device is the redesigned iOS 27 operating system. The iPhone Duo includes side-navigation adjustments, vertical Dynamic Island integration, and Split View capabilities to run two applications side-by-side. The StandBy feature can now be active on both the inner and outer screens without requiring the device to be charging.
In terms of power, the device employs a dual-battery system that supports fast charging up to 50 per cent in approximately 20 minutes via a 60W cable, or 30 minutes wirelessly (MagSafe/Qi2). The iPhone Duo supports eSIM only, which applies globally, and also features the N1 wireless chip (Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6) and the C2 modem to strengthen connectivity range.
The iPhone Duo is available in Star White and Night Sky colours, with storage options ranging from 256 GB, 512 GB, 1 TB, up to 2 TB. Apple’s first foldable phone is priced from US$1,999 (approximately Rp35 million) to US$3,199 (approximately Rp56 million). Apple will begin sales of the device on 16 October in the US market.
