Apple has brought a number of significant upgrades to the iPhone 18 Pro compared with its predecessor, the iPhone 17 Pro. These include a new main camera, the A20 Pro chip, a larger cooling system and support for faster charging.

The improvements, however, come with a higher price. In Indonesia, the iPhone 18 Pro starts at Rp27,499,000 for the 256 GB model, while the iPhone 17 Pro with the same storage capacity costs Rp23,749,000.

Citing Gizmochina, the two phones look almost identical from the outside. The most noticeable differences are the new colour options and a smaller Dynamic Island. Apple has nevertheless made numerous changes to the internal components, affecting the camera, performance and device endurance.

So, are the upgrades worth the price increase? Here is a full comparison of the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro.

  1. Camera

The biggest change to the iPhone 18 Pro is its main camera. From the iPhone 14 Pro through to the iPhone 17 Pro, Apple consistently used a fixed f/1.78 lens aperture.

With the iPhone 18 Pro, Apple has introduced a 48 MP Fusion main camera with a mechanical aperture for the first time. It can adjust from f/1.48 to f/4 using six laser-cut blades.

Users can let the Camera app select the aperture automatically or choose from four available manual settings. Apple has also added manual controls for aperture, shutter speed, white balance and the histogram.

The f/1.48 aperture can capture around 45% more light than the previous generation’s f/1.78 lens. This is useful for shooting in low-light conditions and also produces a more blurred background in portrait photos.

Conversely, the f/4 aperture keeps more of the image in focus. This setting is particularly useful for landscapes, group photos and subjects in bright sunlight. On the iPhone 17 Pro, some similar effects still rely on software processing.

Apple has also added Smart Focus to track subjects while shooting, a faster Night Mode, cinematic effects at up to 60 frames per second (fps), and the ability to record 4K Dolby Vision HDR time-lapse video. Apple Reference Image is another new feature: it stores the original photo along with verification data to help establish that the image has not been manipulated by AI.

There are, however, no major changes to the ultra-wide or front cameras. The telephoto camera also retains the 4x and 8x optical zoom options found on the iPhone 17 Pro.

  1. Performance

The iPhone 18 Pro is powered by the A20 Pro chip, built on a 2-nanometre (nm) manufacturing process, while the iPhone 17 Pro uses the 3 nm A19 Pro.

Both have 12 GB of RAM, but the A20 Pro combines a six-core CPU with a seven-core GPU. Apple says the latest-generation GPU offers up to 40% faster performance than its predecessor, while memory bandwidth has increased by up to 50%.

The A20 Pro also has two 16-core Neural Engines, doubling its capacity for on-device AI processing, including support for the latest generation of Siri AI.

Apple has updated the cooling system to manage heat. The iPhone 17 Pro uses a conventional vapour chamber, while the iPhone 18 Pro has a new design connected directly to the chip, with three times the surface area. Apple says this can improve sustained performance by up to 40%.

The improvements are particularly useful for demanding, extended tasks such as intensive gaming, exporting 4K video and processing AI workloads, without the phone slowing down quickly due to thermal throttling. For light everyday use, however, the difference may not be very noticeable, as the iPhone 17 Pro’s A19 Pro is already highly capable.

  1. Battery and charging

Apple says the iPhone 17 Pro can play video for up to 33 hours. That figure rises to a claimed 36 hours on the eSIM-only version of the iPhone 18 Pro.

The new phone also supports faster charging. With a 40-watt adapter, the iPhone 18 Pro’s battery can reach 50% in around 15 minutes, compared with about 20 minutes for the iPhone 17 Pro.

The 36-hour battery claim applies to the eSIM-only version sold in the United States, Canada, Japan, Mexico and several other countries. The phone also features a C2 modem that uses 15% less power, and an N1 wireless chip supporting Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and Thread.

  1. Design and display

There are few physical differences between the two phones. Both use a 6.3-inch OLED display with 120 Hz ProMotion technology, peak brightness of up to 3,000 nits and a unibody aluminium body.

The iPhone 18 Pro weighs 211 grams, slightly more than the 206-gram iPhone 17 Pro. Their overall dimensions are almost identical, so an iPhone 17 Pro case can still be used with the new model.

The most noticeable visual changes include:

  • A smaller Dynamic Island, now able to display up to three Live Activities at once.

  • The Face ID camera has moved beneath the display in the top-left corner.

  • The rear glass panel now has a uniform colour matching the camera module.

  • New colour options: Black, Silver, Glacier and Burgundy. The previous year’s Cosmic Orange has been discontinued.

  • A new, very large 2 TB storage option.

  1. iOS 27 and Siri AI

The iPhone 18 Pro runs iOS 27 and the latest generation of Apple Intelligence out of the box. However, the operating system is not in itself a major reason to upgrade in a hurry, since iOS 27 is also available as a free update for iPhone 17 Pro users.

Nevertheless, the A20 Pro’s more powerful Neural Engines and higher memory bandwidth make the iPhone 18 Pro better equipped to handle complex future AI features directly on the device.

Conclusion: Is it worth upgrading?

With a price difference of several million rupiah, the iPhone 18 Pro offers a range of notable improvements, including a variable-aperture camera, a powerful A20 Pro chip, a substantially improved cooling system and faster charging.

But if your iPhone 17 Pro is working smoothly and these features are not essential to your everyday needs, keeping your current phone or waiting for a special offer or price drop on the iPhone 17 Pro may be the wiser choice.
