Geneva (ANTARA) - The International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced on Thursday (18/6) that the Community Sport and Health Cooperation Initiative is targeted to reach 100 million people in China by the end of 2028. According to the IOC, as part of the initiative, 32 community sport and health centres across China are providing facilities and activities for people of various age groups ahead of Olympic Day on 23 June, inspired by the IOC’s global initiative titled “Let’s Move”. “This initiative responds to significant public health challenges in China. Only 37.2 per cent of the country’s population regularly participates in sport and physical activity, while 80 per cent of adolescent boys and 85 per cent of adolescent girls do not meet the physical activity levels recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO),” the IOC stated. Launched in January 2026, the initiative engages communities through a combination of digital and face-to-face outreach activities designed to encourage participation in sport and physical activity. In cooperation with the China Institute of Sport Science (CISS), the IOC plans to improve access to health-enhancing sport and physical activity and help create more active and healthier communities. The programme in China is an expansion of the broader Sport and Health Cooperation Initiative, implemented in partnership with the WHO and the global health NGO PATH in Ghana, Tanzania, Nepal, Peru, and Vietnam.
