One of the causes of the economic crisis in this country is the lack of intelligent people -- those endowed with vision, a sense of criticism, honesty and having public interest at heart -- in the government.

Intellectuals have for a long time criticized the practices of collusion, corruption and nepotism in the former government. They even saw the possibility of riots if the existing order was not corrected.

The criticism was not accepted and the critics were removed from their government positions to be replaced by "yes" men.

It is sad to see that the pattern has entered the private sector too. Brilliant people are not wanted because they are more prominent than their superiors, which is seen as a threat. A disagreeable work ambience is created by playing employees against each other.

Will we continue to live in these conditions? May Pak Habibie be able to surprise us and introduce a change by giving an opportunity to intellectuals and younger people who have brilliant ideas to lead this nation.
