Jakarta — The Ministry of Investment and Downstreaming/Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM) has stepped in to mediate an extortion case experienced by PT Chandra Asri Alkali (CAA) at the hands of rogue business operators in Cilegon. The move was taken as an effort to maintain a conducive and attractive investment climate for investors.

As a show of support, BKPM facilitated a meeting between Banten Governor Andra Soni, Banten Regional Police Chief Inspector General Suyudi Ario Seto, representatives of the national and regional chambers of commerce (Kadin), and representatives of PT CAA at the Ministry of Investment and Downstreaming office on Wednesday (14/5/2025).

Deputy Minister of Investment and Downstreaming/Deputy Head of BKPM, Todotua Pasaribu, affirmed the government's commitment to ensuring the smooth progress of CAA's investment as an important part of national industrial downstreaming.

"The state is obliged to provide security guarantees for investment, both for domestic and foreign investors, so that the investment climate remains conducive and sustainable," he said on Thursday (15/5/2025).

Todotua stated that the incident in Banten must be a matter of shared concern and addressed seriously. As Chair of the Investment Acceleration Task Force, BKPM, together with relevant agencies, will take swift and concrete steps to ensure investment projects proceed smoothly.

He expressed regret over the Cilegon incident and affirmed that legal proceedings would be left entirely to law enforcement authorities, in this case the Banten Regional Police.

"We hope this legal process will serve as a deterrent so that Indonesia's investment climate remains well-maintained," Todotua stressed.

Furthermore, Todotua emphasised the importance of strengthening oversight of business partnership arrangements to prevent similar incidents. BKPM has established partnership mechanisms through Minister of Investment/Head of BKPM Regulation Number 1 of 2022 concerning Procedures for Implementing Partnerships in the Investment Sector between Large Enterprises and MSMEs in the regions.
