Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia - Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology has become a new 'treasure trove' opening up numerous opportunities. The Indonesian government continues to push for AI adoption across all sectors, citing its extraordinary impact.

"If we look at the tremendous benefits, it's not only about improving efficiency and productivity. That is indeed the main factor for competitiveness," said Investment and Downstreaming Minister/Head of the Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM), Rosan Roeslani, at the Indonesia AI Day for Mining Industry on Thursday (24/5/2025).

Rosan said AI could enable Indonesia to compete with many countries, and even surpass them. According to him, AI differs from mining, which depends on prices and the industry itself. AI technology can be controlled and determined by productivity, efficiency and the profits derived from it.

"The use of AI under our control can be very decisive. We can analyse and utilise it to determine the bottom line, profit and loss. That's one aspect. So AI will indeed play a very important role," he explained.

Rosan added that AI development must be accompanied by enhancing the role of Indonesia's human resources. There must be reskilling and upskilling on the human side to optimise AI usage.

"That is a challenge, because if AI usage is not optimal — if the AI infrastructure is already good, for example Indosat has built its infrastructure for AI, but if the human usage or human resources are not maximised, not optimal — then the outcomes will not be optimal either," Rosan said.

"So what we must also look at properly is how our human resources can grow and develop alongside the increasingly widespread use of AI going forward," he explained.

AI is set to become the backbone of global economic progress in the future, as well as featuring in people's daily lives. In relation to mining, AI can deliver many positive improvements, including connections with renewable energy.

"Because AI itself cannot stand alone without the support of renewable energy, so this also raises living standards and improves the quality of life for all of us, especially for the Indonesian nation," he said.
