Amid the acceleration of the national downstreaming agenda, Minister of Investment and Downstreaming/Head of BKPM and CEO of Danantara Indonesia, Rosan P. Roeslani, emphasised the importance of maintaining a balance between industrial growth and environmental sustainability. He conveyed this message during a visit to the PT Vale Indonesia (PT Vale) Indonesia Growth Project (IGP) Morowali, following a ceremony for the arrival of an autoclave, the main equipment for the High Pressure Acid Leaching (HPAL) project in the Sambalagi plant area. During the visit, Rosan was accompanied by several Danantara officials, including Managing Director of Danantara Asset Management, Febriany Eddy. The delegation was welcomed by Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of PT Vale Indonesia Tbk Bernardus Irmanto, Chief Project Officer (CPO) of PT Vale Indonesia Tbk Muhammad Asril, and other members of PT Vale’s management. Rosan directly inspected the progress of the strategic project as well as various sustainability initiatives implemented by PT Vale in its operations. One location that drew attention was the nursery facility, a plant propagation centre supporting post-mining land rehabilitation and reclamation programmes. At the site, PT Vale Indonesia CEO Bernardus Irmanto outlined the company’s environmental management efforts, ranging from nursery development, land rehabilitation and reclamation, and sediment pond management, to various other environmental conservation programmes. The explanation provided a comprehensive picture of the company’s commitment to ensuring operational activities run in tandem with environmental protection efforts. Amid the expanse of PT Vale’s operational area, the nursery facility stands as a tangible representation of that commitment. More than just a propagation facility, it is part of the company’s long-term approach to integrating Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles into its entire business cycle. Through these initiatives, PT Vale seeks to maintain a balance between industrial growth, environmental conservation, and community empowerment. Rosan expressed his appreciation for these efforts directly. “I am very pleased and happy to see firsthand PT Vale’s site in Morowali. What I paid most attention to is how the sustainability aspect, which maintains a balance between the environment and social factors, is highly prioritised here. We see the nursery facility, as well as the application of best mining practices with international standards. The hope is that this can be maintained,” said Rosan. The appreciation reflects the increasing attention to the quality of investment entering Indonesia. Amid the push for downstreaming to create domestic added value, the sustainability aspect is a crucial foundation for ensuring economic growth occurs inclusively and responsibly. Rosan stressed that a strong industry is one that can grow together with the environment and the surrounding community. “What is no less important is how we maintain harmony from the business side, both in terms of ESG and the surrounding community. That way, incoming investment can provide sustainable benefits, not only for the company but also for the region and the community,” he added. Besides visiting the nursery, the delegation also toured the jetty, which is a key strategic infrastructure supporting the project’s operations. The group also had the opportunity to observe PT Vale’s mining activities from the air. From this observation, it was clear how production activities are carried out alongside the application of responsible mining principles, from area management to environmental protection and restoration efforts. This approach is part of PT Vale’s commitment to supporting the national downstreaming agenda, which aims not only to create economic added value but also to ensure sustainable benefits for the community and the environment in the long term.
