Investment Minister Affirms Coconut Downstream Processing Key to Creating Added Value and Jobs
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Investment and Downstream Processing Minister/BKPM Head Rosan Perkasa Roeslani has affirmed that downstream processing of commodities, including coconut, is vital for creating added value and opening new employment opportunities for farmers across commodity-producing regions.
"Coconut is also very interesting — it's a highly attractive commodity. We have just begun downstream processing for coconut," said Rosan during the International Conference on Infrastructure (ICI) 2025 in Jakarta on Thursday.
Rosan stated that coconut is a particularly attractive commodity due to its high added value when optimally processed through downstream industrialisation. He noted that one week ago the government laid the foundation stone for a coconut downstream processing facility located in Morowali, Central Sulawesi.
According to Minister Rosan, this strategic move will be replicated across several other provinces to accelerate the national development of coconut-based industries. He said coconut downstream processing holds significant potential for job creation and improving the welfare of coconut farmers throughout Indonesia.
Although investment in the sector has not yet been maximised, he expressed confidence that future prospects are bright as global demand for coconut derivative products continues to rise. Rosan stressed that coconut's potential should be viewed not merely as a commodity but as a new economic opportunity for communities in the agribusiness sector.
"So this is also very interesting — even though investment may not yet be optimal, there will be job creation, and it will help a great many coconut farmers in Indonesia. The potential is there," he added.
Previously, Agriculture Minister Andi Amran Sulaiman said his ministry is working to increase the export value of coconut commodities to Rp60 trillion per year through downstream processing.
Amran, speaking in Jakarta on Wednesday (28/5), said Indonesia's current coconut production stands at 2 million tonnes per year, with an export value of approximately Rp20 trillion. However, if processed, this could yield added value of up to three times that figure.
"Under the President's directive, we will pursue downstream processing in the agricultural sector. Our coconut exports of 2 million tonnes are worth roughly Rp20 trillion. With downstream processing, God willing, this could double or triple. The future value could reach Rp40 trillion or even Rp60 trillion," said Amran.
