TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta: Economist Faisal Basri doubts the entry of investment from Middle East countries to Indonesia. He believes that the government is mistaken to expect funds to be transferred from the leaders of these oil-producing countries.
According to Faisal, a large part of the money belonging to the Middle East oil kings is organized by fund managers from Europe and America. “So if one wants to take hold of the fund, he must meet with the fund managers first,” said Faisal in Jakarta yesterday.
However, if a party wants to obtain a grant or loans from Middle East countries, Faisal continued, the appropriate place to go to is the Islamic Development Bank. “So a promise of investment amounting to US$ 5.3 billion is nonsense,” he said.
The government, said Faisal, must be more realistic in looking for investment sources. He also said the government is not serious enough in looking for sources domestically and abroad when there are not any more investments from domestic sources.
