Investment Can Create Independence in Indonesia's Health Industry, How?

Health Minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin revealed that the domestic health industry can develop without depending on foreign sources. Moreover, the national health industry can attract very large investments.

“I tell my colleagues, initially we wanted to maintain our health resilience so we wouldn’t depend on other countries. The Covid experience showed that when a pandemic hits and there’s a lockdown, we can’t import. If we depend on foreign countries,” he disclosed during the CNBC Indonesia Economic Update 2026, Wednesday (24/6/2026).

According to him, the national health industry can attract investors due to positive performance growth in recent years. Health spending was recorded at Rp 640 trillion in one year, growing 9% to 11%.

“I am currently in discussions with a company from Japan that wants to invest 1 billion USD. That 1 billion USD will later become 3 billion in GDP,” he revealed.

Not only that, various international companies eyeing this potential include General Electric, Aspen Medical, Swire Group, and SK Plasma.

“Apollo Hospital has also come to us, wanting to cooperate with Mayapada, they also want to enter. Not to mention domestic investors like Astra and Djarum, which have entered Hermina,” Budi explained.

In addition to healthcare services, domestic health manufacturers are now starting to be able to produce various medical devices, such as anthropometry tools, USG machines, vaccines, and even CT Scanners. This production is carried out through cooperation with global companies.

“GE (General Electric) is now entering into a cooperation with Kalbe. To build this quite complicated CT Scan industry domestically,” he said.

Meanwhile, for vaccine drug production, there are currently three domestic producers, namely Bio Farma, Etana, and Biotis.
