Investigation Results into Dr Myta's Death: Intern Doctors in Jambi Not Given Leave
JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - The Director General of Human Resources for Health at the Ministry of Health, Yuli Farianti, has revealed that intern doctors in Kuala Tungkal were never given days off, including Dr Myta Aprilia Azmy, who ultimately fell ill and passed away.
This fact was disclosed by Yuli during a press conference on the results of the investigation into medical internships following the death of the intern doctor, a graduate of the Faculty of Medicine at Sriwijaya University (Unsri), Dr Myta Aprilia Azmy, due to alleged overwork.
“The minimum day off is one day off each week. In the case of Kuala Tungkal, there were never any days off; they worked from Saturday to Sunday,” said Yuli at the Ministry of Health office in South Jakarta on Thursday (7/5/2026).
“Even on Sundays, they only did ward visits for 2-3 hours, but sometimes they waited for the Responsible Service Doctor (DPJP), and sometimes they visited all the rooms that should have been done by the DPJP,” she added.
Yuli emphasised that, if followed according to the rules, the work pattern for intern doctors is a maximum of 40 hours per week or 8 hours per day.
“So the regulation on hours is 40 hours per week with a tolerance for an additional 20 percent of time,” she stated.
“The supervisors always give reasons to the interns, saying this is so that your performance can be achieved. As a result, the interns seem to be intimidated like that, and they end up doing it,” said Yuli.
In the future, the Ministry of Health will no longer use the term for the additional 20 percent time.
“Because of that, starting tomorrow, there will be no more mention of additional 20 percent time. Exactly 40 hours per week; additions to working hours and changes to work patterns are not permitted,” she said.
Yuli emphasised that supervising doctors for internships should not overcrowd the interns’ duty schedules for any reason.
“Here, the first (investigation result) is that the supervisory role was not carried out properly. So there should be an agreement on duties, but there was no agreement on duties. The duties were set by the intern team, the junior interns,” said Yuli.
She had been treated in the ICU at Dr. Mohammad Hoesin General Hospital (RSMH) in Palembang before finally taking her last breath on Friday (1/5/2026).
