Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Democracy Advocacy Team (TAUD) has called on President Prabowo Subianto to establish an independent investigation team to probe the acid-pouring attack on Andrie Yunus, Deputy Coordinator of the Commission for Missing Persons and Victims of Violence (KontraS).

Afif Abdul Qoyum, advocacy staff at the Indonesian Legal Aid Foundation (YLBHI) and TAUD member, stated that President Prabowo’s independent investigation team must consult with victim supporters and the victim’s family during its formation.

“We, on behalf of the democracy advocacy team, are directing this request to the President of the Republic of Indonesia to establish an independent investigation team in consultation with victim supporters and the victim’s family to ensure objective and comprehensive fact-finding,” he said during a press conference at YLBHI headquarters in Central Jakarta on Monday.

Afif further stated that the investigation team must be free from pressure from various interests whilst investigating the Andrie Yunus case in accordance with applicable laws and regulations.

“And to ensure that all perpetrators are held accountable without obstacles arising from conflicts of interest, as regulated by law,” he said.

Additionally, he also requested the Indonesian National Police (Polri) to instruct the Metropolitan Jakarta Police Chief, the Central Jakarta Police Chief and police ranks to investigate the case transparently and with accountability.

Complementing the investigation task, Afif emphasised the role of the Attorney General in appointing investigating prosecutors to coordinate with investigators and prosecutors as regulated in Articles 58 to 60 of the Criminal Procedure Code (KUHAP).

“In order to accommodate the construction of Article 459 in conjunction with Article 17 in conjunction with Article 20 or Law Number 1 of 2003 concerning Criminal Law, as well as to reach the intellectual actors behind this criminal act,” he explained.

TAUD, he said, also requested the National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM) to provide recommendations to President Prabowo to conduct an investigation through an independent investigation team, and requested the Witness and Victim Protection Agency (LPSK) to ensure the safety and support of the victim.

“Fifthly, directed to the head of the Witness and Victim Protection Agency to ensure the safety and privacy of the victim, victim’s family, witnesses and supporters until this case is thoroughly and completely investigated and there are no further risks of threats,” he concluded.
