Introspection

From Koran Tempo

The failed meeting at Bogor Palace (July 9, 2001) is indicative of the deep political rift between President Abdurrahman Wahid and various parties, such as the House of Representatives (DPR) and police.

This is caused by President Abdurrahman's bombastic statements, such as his threat to declare a state of emergency and dissolve the House of Representatives should a compromise not be reached by July 20.

Through his spokesperson Yahya C. Staquf, he ordered Coordinating Minister for Political, Social and Security Affairs Agum Gumelar and National Police deputy chief Chaeruddin Ismail to arrest National Police chief Suroyo Bimantoro and Jakarta Police chief Sofjan Yacob.

On July 13, 2001, after Friday prayers at a pesantren (Islamic boarding school) in Cirebon, he again threatened to issue a decree on the declaration of a state of emergency on Friday, July 20 at 6 p.m.

This statement has certainly raised the political temperature and was deliberately made to foil the upcoming special session of the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR).

President Abdurrahman is also trying to influence public opinion and garner support for the issuance of such a decree, which seems to be a last ditch attempt to save his presidency, as his four conditions on the convening of the special session (scheduled for Aug. 1) have been ignored by the political elite.

As a member of the public, I am very apprehensive about the President's maneuvers because in addition to escalating the political tension, they will also disrupt the workings of the nation.

Former coordinating minister for political, social and security affairs Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said a "political collision" or deadlock in the special session should be avoided, as it would lead to more conflict.

I think the people at large feel discomforted by the President's actions and behavior. In his almost two-year tenure, peace has not prevailed because he has been creating enemies.

As the nation's leader, President Abdurrahman should introspect, realize his mistakes and try to create peace on this land through his words and deeds.
