JAKARTA, investortrust.id - As part of implementing the Three Pillars of Higher Education, Universitas Mercu Buana (UMB) and lecturers from Universitas Pelita Bangsa (UPB) held a community service activity at RPTRA Matahari Maphar, Taman Sari Subdistrict, West Jakarta, on Thursday (7 May 2026). In partnership with PT PNM, the event was attended by 34 micro-businesses in the West Jakarta area.

The theme raised was “Digitalisation of Businesses and Green Economy for the Sustainability of SMEs in West Jakarta”. This theme is important because, as business actors, SMEs are not only required to seek short-term profits but also need to ensure their businesses can last long while preserving the natural environment.

The PNM Mekaar product (Nurturing Prosperous Family Economy) is a group-based empowerment and business capital financing programme specifically targeted at underprivileged women micro-entrepreneurs. Launched in 2015, this programme is a service from PT PNM, a subsidiary of BRI, focusing on business mentoring and collateral-free loans through a joint liability group system.

In a press release on Sunday (10 May 2026), it was stated that the community service activity began with opening remarks from a representative lecturer from UMB and from a PNM representative. The first material presentation was by Prof. Dr. Retno Purwani Setyaningrum (UPB), discussing Digitalisation of Businesses and Green Economy for the sustainability of micro-businesses. This was followed by presentations from lecturers in the Master of Management programme at Universitas Mercu Buana, Jakarta. The UMB presentation opened with material on Implementing E-Commerce for SMEs in West Jakarta, delivered by Dr. Baruna Hadibrata, MM, and continued with material on Digital-Based Green Marketing Implementation Model to Promote SME Business Sustainability by Dr. Afriapollo Syafarudin, MM.

Next, material on Applying Green Products for the Continuity of Small Businesses in West Jakarta was presented by Dr. Niken Sulistyowati, MM. Meanwhile, material on Enhancing the Capacity of Micro-Entrepreneurs in Implementing Green Business for Business Sustainability in West Jakarta was delivered by Dr. Parwoto. The event discussed how to maintain environmental sustainability by applying green products to achieve long-term business continuity. The activity concluded with mentoring for micro-entrepreneurs so that in the future they can manage their businesses better and more wisely.

Micro, small, and medium enterprises (SMEs) are an important foundation in Indonesia’s economy. This sector absorbs significant labour and contributes to regional economic growth. SMEs have high flexibility and adaptability, enabling them to survive and develop in various market conditions.

Nevertheless, SMEs often face challenges such as limited access to capital, technology, and markets. The government and various parties continue to strive to provide support through training, mentoring, and licensing facilitation.

With the right support, SMEs can become increasingly competitive and serve as the main driver of Indonesia’s economy. Investment in SMEs is an investment in the nation’s future.
