Intimate Ballrooms Predicted to Become a Trend and Dominate the Jakarta Market
The meeting and ballroom market in Jakarta is undergoing a fundamental shift. The era of large venues with capacities of thousands of people is now facing saturation, replaced by medium-sized commercial spaces that prioritise personalisation and spatial efficiency.
Urban consumer preferences are rapidly shifting towards smaller but adaptable spaces that can provide closer interaction.
Data from Statistics Indonesia (BPS) for Jakarta confirms that the recovery of the hospitality sector will take time. The occupancy rate of star hotels in Jakarta in February 2026 was recorded at 51.72%. This figure slightly decreased in March 2026 to 43.97%.
Interestingly, this decline in room occupancy occurred anomalously amid a surge in public mobility. Domestic tourist trips to Jakarta grew by 2.26% year-on-year in February, reaching 8.12 million trips, and surged to 15.54% year-on-year in March 2026.
The widening gap between high levels of movement and moderate hotel occupancy rates indicates a shift in consumer spending patterns. Corporate and individual tourists visiting Jakarta are no longer spending large amounts on long-term accommodation but are focusing on the effectiveness of their visit, including the implementation of concise social or business activities.
Bank Indonesia, through its Commercial Property Survey for the first quarter of 2026, confirms that businesses in the hospitality, convention, retail, and office space subsectors remain very conservative. On the other hand, the property investment sector is also slowing down. The Bank Indonesia Residential Property Price Survey recorded that the growth in primary house prices in the first quarter of 2026 was only 0.62% year-on-year.
Pressure on this main market is forcing hotel developers and commercial asset managers to seek new, more resilient revenue niches against economic fluctuations. This local phenomenon is intertwined with the global Meetings, Incentives, Conventions, and Exhibitions (MICE) industry trend.
