Intervention in
Intervention in law enforcement
From Media Indonesia
As Indonesia is a law-based state, Indonesians long to witness the implementation of proper legal enforcement in this country, where, today, the law applies only to the poor but not to the well-to-do, for whom the law is a commodity that can be traded.
There are signs, however, that law enforcement agencies are now improving their image. They have brought to the court not only petty criminals but also important people allegedly involved in corruption, such as a former secretary of state and incumbent House speaker, a deputy speaker of the People's Consultative Assembly, the incumbent Bank Indonesia governor and a number of former New Order ministers. Even a lawyer has been detained for alleged wrongdoing.
Thumbs up to the law enforcement bodies' efforts to apply the law strictly to the letter. However, we are sad to see that there are some of us who still try to prevent law enforcement agencies from upholding the law, for example in the detention of lawyer Elza Syarief and commander of Laskar Jihad Ja'far Umar Thalib. Why don't we just let the law enforcement agencies do their job? The courts will decide whether to punish or exonerate them.
Let's all support law enforcement agencies in their effort to enforce the law.
