Interpol Issues Red Notice for Sheikh Ahmad Al Misry in Sexual Abuse Case

The National Police’s International Relations Division has confirmed that Interpol has issued a Red Notice for Sheikh Ahmad Al Misry, a suspect in a sexual abuse case. The notice was officially published last week. The division’s head, Brigadier General Untung Widyatmoko, stated that based on monitoring, the suspect is still in Egypt. “The Red Notice was issued last week. He is still in Egypt, and efforts to arrest him are ongoing,” he told reporters on Monday (3/8).

Sheikh Ahmad Al Misry was formally named a suspect by the Criminal Investigation Department following a case review on Wednesday (22/4). According to the victims’ legal counsel, Benny Jehadu, the suspect frequently appeared on television as a judge for Quran recitation competitions. The case involves more than one victim, and the legal team stated that all clients have suffered profound psychological trauma.

Previously, Untung Widyatmoko noted that Egyptian authorities are still trying to determine the suspect’s exact location. “The only response we received by telephone was that they are currently searching for his precise whereabouts, specifically which province he is in,” he said via text message on Wednesday (13/5). He also denied circulating reports that Al Misry was en route to Indonesia. Untung added that Egyptian authorities have yet to formally respond to the request to facilitate an examination of the suspect, who holds dual Indonesian and Egyptian citizenship.
