Interpol Fugitive Arrested in Bali Extradited to Ethiopia
A high-profile fugitive from Ethiopia, Selman Mohammed Yermin, has been arrested at I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport, Bali. Following his detention, the subject of an Interpol Red Notice for large-scale investment fraud was handed over to his home country’s police via NCB Addis Ababa.
The arrest of Selman began with a joint operation between NCB Interpol Indonesia and the Directorate General of Immigration at Ngurah Rai Airport on Sunday (6/9/2026). Selman, who was on the international wanted list, was apprehended while passing through the airport.
The Head of International Relations at the Indonesian National Police, Brigadier General Untung Widyatmoko, stated that his department immediately coordinated the handover process. The Indonesian National Police International Relations Division team personally escorted the fugitive until his arrival in Ethiopia on Wednesday (16/9/2026).
“Personnel from the Indonesian National Police International Relations Division conducted the escort and handover to NCB Addis Ababa of the Interpol Red Notice subject, an Ethiopian national named Selman Mohammed Yimer, regarding criminal fraud,” said Brigadier General Untung in a statement on Friday (18/9/2026).
According to Untung, Selman was a high-profile target specifically requested by NCB Addis Ababa as part of Interpol’s Operation Infra Africa 2.0 Harare. His name had been recorded in the Interpol Red Notice (Control No: A-6720/4-2026) since 29 April 2026, followed by a formal request for arrest and extradition on 8 September 2026.
Untung explained that Selman was involved in fraud cases with numerous victims in Ethiopia. To carry out his crimes, he posed as a representative of an investment firm.
“The subject of the Interpol Red Notice committed large-scale fraud in Ethiopia against many victims by using a modus operandi of pretending to be a representative of a trading company to offer investments, alongside other fraudulent methods,” explained Untung.
The fraudulent activities carried out by Selman are estimated to have caused losses to victims amounting to ETB 46,445,158, or approximately USD 284,748.25.
The Indonesian National Police International Relations Division team and the fugitive arrived at Addis Ababa International Airport on Wednesday (16/9) at 12:50 local time, escorted by NCB Addis Ababa. Subsequently, the team arrived at the Ethiopian Federal Police headquarters to hand Selman over directly.
“The team was received personally by Mr. Mouma, Commissioner of the Ethiopian Federal Police, who expressed his welcome and high appreciation to NCB Jakarta for assisting in the arrest and repatriation to Addis Ababa,” said Untung.
Untung emphasised that the handover of the fugitive is a tangible manifestation of the Indonesian National Police’s global synergy in combating transnational crime. “This is a form of commitment to cooperation between the two nations to continue fighting transnational and international criminals. The handover process was completed smoothly,” he concluded.
