International Manhunt Underway for Sheikh Ahmad Al Misry in Egypt

An Interpol Red Notice has been issued for Sheikh Ahmad Al Misry, officially designating the sexual abuse suspect as an international fugitive. Brigadier General Untung Widyatmoko, Head of the Indonesian National Police’s International Relations Division, confirmed that the Red Notice was published last week. “The Red Notice has been issued since last week,” Untung told reporters on Monday (3 August). Untung stated that Sheikh Ahmad Al Misry is currently in Egypt and that police will coordinate with local authorities. “He is still in Egypt. Efforts to apprehend him are ongoing,” he explained. Sheikh Ahmad Al Misry was named a suspect by the Criminal Investigation Agency of the Indonesian National Police in a case of alleged sexual abuse of students. Brigadier General Trunoyudo Wisnu Andiko, Head of the Public Information Bureau of the National Police’s Public Relations Division, said the suspect was identified by investigators from the Directorate of Crimes against Women and Children and Human Trafficking following a case review on Wednesday, 22 April. According to the victims’ legal counsel, Benny Jehadu, Sheikh Ahmad Al Misry frequently appeared on television as a judge for Quran recitation competitions. The legal representative explained that the criminal case involved more than one victim, all of whom have suffered severe psychological trauma as a result of the incident.
