Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Health has officially launched the integration of BPJS Kesehatan services at Rumah Sakit Kardiologi Emirates Indonesia (RS KEI) in Surakarta, allowing all National Health Insurance (JKN) participants to access these international-standard heart services.

Deputy Minister of Health Dante Saksono Harbuwono described the step as a vital milestone in strengthening the national health system, particularly in managing catastrophic diseases. He likened the hospital to a vital organ, with BPJS Kesehatan serving as the blood flow sustaining healthcare services.

“Without a robust financing scheme, even the most advanced medical technology would remain static,” said Dante in Jakarta on Wednesday.

The enhancement of heart services is deemed urgent based on data from the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME), which records more than 600,000 deaths in Indonesia each year due to cardiovascular diseases. This means one in three deaths in the country stems from such illnesses.

Since its inauguration in November 2025, this class A specialised heart hospital has treated 1,053 patients and achieved Full Accreditation. RS KEI is supported by various cutting-edge technologies, such as cathlab, hybrid operating theatre, CT scan, and MRI, capable of handling complex procedures, including mitral valve replacement.

In agreement, Director of Health Service Guarantee at BPJS Kesehatan, Abdi Kurniawan, views the presence of RS KEI as highly strategic in breaking geographical barriers and accelerating heart patient treatment.

“In heart management, every second is precious. The golden period concept must not remain merely a medical theory but become an operational standard,” stated Abdi.

He also conveyed four strategic messages to RS KEI’s management: transformation of service quality (quality over volume), seamless digitalisation of services, strengthening referral networks, and humane care. According to him, financing for heart diseases should not be seen merely as expenditure but as an investment in preserving the nation’s productivity.

RS KEI is a hospital built through a grant from the United Arab Emirates Government via the Zayed Humanitarian Legacy Initiative. The 100-bed hospital was inaugurated by President Prabowo Subianto alongside Sheikh Theyab bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan on 19 November 2025.

Currently, the Ministry of Health has tasked RSUP Dr. Sardjito in Yogyakarta with supporting the hospital’s operations to maintain service quality. RS KEI is also projected to become a heart service referral centre for Central Java, DIY, and surrounding areas.
