Intern Doctor's Workload Highlighted Following Myta's Death
The Indonesian Federation of Medical and Health Workers’ Unions (FSPMKI) has highlighted provisions on work hour loads in the case of the death of intern doctor Myta Aprilia Azmi at RSUD KH. Daud Arif, Kuala Tungkal, Jambi.
FSPMKI General Chairman Dr Roy Tanda Anugrah Sihotang stated that this case must receive attention, particularly from government-owned hospitals in implementing labour regulations. “Including work hours, overtime, leave, and other labour norms,” Roy said in a written statement on Thursday, 7 May 2026.
FSPMKI, he continued, urges the government, especially the Ministry of Health, to implement labour provisions based on Government Regulation No. 35 of 2021.
In the provisions regulating work hour loads, it is stipulated that a worker may only perform work for a maximum of 40 hours in one week or 8 hours per day.
Roy stated that these provisions must also apply to doctors with intern status. According to Roy, intern doctors must receive leave rights, including menstrual leave for women, up to overtime policies based on worker consent. “All these labour norm regulations must be included in the internship work agreement between the hospital and the intern doctor,” Roy said.
He reminded that the ultimate goal expected by workers, including doctors, is occupational safety, including for interns. Therefore, FSPMKI urges the government to involve workers in the formulation of regulations.
“In the future, the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Manpower must involve workers as elements of society in supervising the implementation of labour regulations related to this internship programme,” he said.
Meanwhile, intern doctor Myta Aprilia Azmi was reported to have died while undergoing intensive treatment at RS Muhammad Hoesin, Palembang, South Sumatra, on Friday, 1 May 2026.
This University of Sriwijaya alumnus doctor is suspected to have died due to excessive workload while on duty at RSUD KH. Daud Arif, Kuala Tungkal, Jambi. The Ministry of Health is still investigating this case.
