Intern Doctor Dies in Lampung, IDI Says No Indication of Overwork

A doctor participating in the Indonesian Doctor Internship Programme (PIDI), M Zulfikar Drakel, has died whilst carrying out his service at Sukadana Regional General Hospital in East Lampung. The Indonesian Medical Association (IDI) for the Lampung region stated that Zulfikar’s death was suspected to have been caused by a previously unknown underlying illness. “The results of the investigation showed no indication of overwork. We also found no evidence of bullying or violence in the workplace,” said Lampung IDI Chairman Josi Harnos when contacted in Bandarlampung on Thursday (23/7/2026). Zulfikar died on 21 July 2026 in Metro City. According to Josi, the investigation was conducted by taking statements from fellow intern doctors, the hospital where he served, the hospital director, and supervising doctors. “From the investigation, it was discovered that there was a suspected underlying illness that was previously unknown,” Josi said. He added that there were also indications of an infection in the body. However, the type and source of the infection could not be determined because the family refused an autopsy. “There was an infection, but it could not be confirmed what kind, where, or how, because the family refused an autopsy. We respect the family’s decision,” he said. He noted that the deceased’s quiet character and the fact that he lived separately from his colleagues made information about his health condition difficult to ascertain. “Therefore, the death of Doctor Zulfikar cannot be equated with previous cases, because the cause is different,” Josi said. He expressed his condolences on the passing of the intern doctor and appreciated the involvement of the Ministry of Health, the Police, the Medical and Health Division, the IDI Central Board, and the Provincial Health Office in the investigation process.
