Interior Minister (Mendagri) Muhammad Tito Karnavian, as Head of the National Border Management Agency (BNPP), discussed preparations for a housing programme in border areas. The discussion took place with BNPP Secretary Makhruzi Rahman and BNPP officials at the Ministry of Home Affairs (Kemendagri) headquarters in Jakarta on Tuesday (14/4/2026). On that occasion, Tito urged BNPP officials to take advantage of the Uninhabitable House Renovation (RTLH) programme initiated by the Ministry of Housing and Settlement Areas (PKP), which targets border areas. He mentioned that the Ministry of PKP has budgeted for the repair of 15,000 RTLH units in border regions. “This [Minister of PKP] Mr Ara has conveyed 15,000 units, originally 10,000 units, now increased to 15,000. Then, the task for BNPP, I ask you to grasp this programme well. Implement it with heart,” Tito explained in a written statement received by Kompas.com. Meanwhile, for detailed data on programme beneficiaries, BNPP can coordinate with the Central Statistics Agency (BPS). This is because BPS already holds detailed data on the social and economic conditions of the population, including those living in RTLH. Thus, the programme’s implementation can be more targeted according to beneficiary criteria. “Because [BPS] has conducted a survey, the National Single Social and Economic Data (DTSEN),” Tito explained. Furthermore, he is convinced that the programme will impact the improvement of community welfare in border areas, thereby strengthening nationalism. “Their nationalism will emerge. That [will become] a buffer zone for defence,” Tito clarified.
