Interfaith Congregations Gather at Monas for National Dhikr and Prayer

Thousands of interfaith worshippers crowded the National Monument (Monas) area, Jakarta, on Saturday night (1/8/2026) to attend the National Dhikr and Prayer event. This activity serves as the opening agenda in the series of celebrations for the Independence Month of the Republic of Indonesia.

Although dominated by the Muslim community, the event showcased the pluralistic face of Indonesia with the presence of followers from various religions, including Hindu, Buddhist, Christian, Catholic, and Confucianism. Their presence serves as a symbol of unity amidst diverse ethnicities and beliefs.

Wayan Kembarayana, a Hindu resident from Cijantung who attended with a group of 50 people, expressed his hope that this activity would strengthen national harmony. He stated that he did not mind that the event included many Islamic traditions, such as the recitation of the Al-Qur’an and salawat.

“The hope is that Indonesia remains peaceful in the current situation. I lived in Bali for a long time, and I am used to such conditions; tolerance and mutual respect are key,” said Wayan at the event location.

The programme began with choir performances from the Directorate General of Christian Community Guidance and the Directorate General of Catholic Community Guidance of the Ministry of Religion. The agenda continued with the recitation of verses from the Holy Qur’an, congregational Maghrib prayers, and the chanting of salawat by Hadrah Ahbabul Musthofa.

As the core of the event, Habib Syech bin Abdul Qodir Assegaf led the National Salawat, which was solemnly followed by all attendees. To conclude, the peak of the event featured a joint prayer led by representatives of various religious leaders in Indonesia.

The National Dhikr and Prayer is expected to serve as a moment of reflection for all elements of the nation to maintain peace and strengthen the spirit of nationalism ahead of the commemoration of the Republic of Indonesia’s Independence Day.
