Intellectuals and future
Intellectuals and future
During a meeting with leaders of associations of intellectuals
of different religious backgrounds, President Soeharto said all
intellectuals should support the nation's unity and integrity.
In the meeting, the intellectuals' representatives reported on
their plan to hold a joint seminar in mid-August to welcome the
49th anniversary of the republic.
The President also appealed to the intellectual leaders to
make the role of human resources in development a central theme
of their coming seminar.
We would like to underline the presidential message because
recently an impression has surfaced that the intellectuals
organizations could turn into political or mass organizations.
We are aware that this impression is wrong. Obviously these
organizations group knowledgeable, educated and wise people.
Like in the past, intellectuals serve as a resource. They are
called on by the society for advice whenever there is a problem
that needs solving.
We believe that the intellectuals are cognizant of this
responsibility.
